Hey Curly Cuties, Welcome back!!! I'm so glad that some of you guys loved my last blog post. I got a few messages from you cuties last week wanting to read part 2! I appreciate the support! So, let's get right to it!!
That Sunday night I was preparing for school to start that Tuesday. I was scrolling through Instagram and saw all of my classmates with their hair done. I immediately felt insecure because I knew I would have to face this new battle of wearing my natural hair. I thought all of the girls looked super cute with their hair done and I was going to go to school looking “ugly.”
That Tuesday morning I braced myself—I washed my hair and put it in a cute puff ball and wore a cute little floral scarf (and of course you know my edges were slayed)! I walked into school confidently and didn’t care what anyone was going to think about my hair. And honestly, I don't think anyone actually tripped about my hair. I received so many compliments and not one rude comment.
Fast forward, I chose to embrace my natural hair even more. I went about a year without weave until it was time to let go of another insecurity that I realized had a hold on me. It was a Wednesday night, this time, and I was feeling very insecure. I decided to talk to one of my youth leaders after the impactful service we had. We covered all bases and she asked questions simply along the lines of “why don’t you wear weave?” In response, I said it was a personal conviction, that for some time, wearing weave was a strong hold for me. As we talked more, she got a better understanding of why I was hesitant or why I really didn’t want to wear weave again. I told her I was nervous that if I did, I may find myself in the trap of not wanting to let it go again. She encouraged me saying that I had to trust and have faith in myself and explained that sometimes some things are just for a season. She suggested that I pray about it and maybe try it out again for fun or to just try something new. I prayed about it and decided to have a little faith in myself. With her accountability and my sisters’, I decided to give it a go.
The question was “weave or no weave” and in the end, I would say both. It’s okay to wear your natural hair out and it’s okay to switch it up and have some fun too. Just make sure it doesn't come from a place of insecurities. If you notice that weave is keeping you from truly loving the gift God has given you, maybe take a break and also learn to trust yourself in the decisions you make. Yes, those Insecurities may pop up again but you have to remember what God said—your hair is your glory and that you are wonderfully and fearfully made. Make your natural hair journey fun!! Try new hairstyles, join a community (JustCurls) and really fall in love with learning to love your hair.
I hope this blog has helped and encouraged you cuties in some type of way. Always remember to embrace what God has given you, He makes no mistake.
Stay tuned for next week’s post, where you’ll hear more on “weave or no weave” from my sister Diamond…
